Official USOS hike!!
If you’re looking for a hike that combines history, bushland, waterways, and a bit of a workout, the Sphinx to Bobbin Head Loop in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park ticks all the boxes. Just 40 minutes from Sydney’s CBD, this trail is close to home and million miles away – all at the same time.
Starting at the Sphinx Memorial
The walk begins at the Sphinx Memorial, a sandstone monument carved in the 1920s by a WWI veteran. It’s a solemn reminder of sacrifice, and it sets a reflective tone before you head into the bush. From here, the track winds steadily downhill through eucalypt forest. The descent is easy-going, shaded, and filled with birdsong – however, as always when life heads downhill, that means that at some point there’s a climb back up.

Following Cowan Creek
After about 2 km, the trail meets the edge of Cowan Creek. The transformation is stunning: one moment you’re among tall gums, the next you’re strolling beside mangroves and tidal waters. Keep an eye out for water dragons basking on the rocks.
This section is wonderfully tranquil. The path hugs the water and passes over boardwalks and small bridges before arriving at Bobbin Head, a popular picnic and boating spot.

A Well-Earned Pause at Bobbin Head
Bobbin Head is the halfway mark and a great place to rest. There’s a café, picnic tables, and toilets if you need a breather. USOS often stops here for a coffee or lunch before tackling the second half of the loop. Next to the café is one of the largest collections of boast you will see in Sydney. It’s always a pleasure to spend a bit of time daydreaming of a life on the ocean wave.

Important tip:
The Empire Marina gate on this side closes at 4 pm. You can exit at any time, but you can’t re-enter the track from Bobbin Head after that.

The Climb Back Up
From Bobbin Head, the trail leads back into the bush. The return route gradually climbs through open forest and sandstone ridges. This uphill section will get the heart rate going – a good reminder that the hike is rated moderate for a reason. Allow plenty of time and water for the climb, especially in warmer months.
Eventually, the loop brings you back to the Sphinx Memorial, completing the circuit. The sense of accomplishment – and the views you’ve taken in along the way – make the effort worth every second.

Why It’s Worth It
The Sphinx to Bobbin Head Loop is more than just a bushwalk. It’s a journey through Sydney’s layered history, a chance to connect with the waterways and ridgelines of Ku-ring-gai Chase, and a satisfying half-day escape into nature.
For hikers in their 50s (like me), it’s a brilliant way to keep fit while soaking up some of the best landscapes Sydney has to offer – just remember the gates and your water bottle, and you’re set.

My Rating
🎒🎒🎒🎒☆ (4 out of 5 backpacks)
Why:
Highlights: Historic starting point, peaceful creekside walking, great facilities at Bobbin Head, a satisfying loop with no backtracking.
Downsides: The climb back up can be tough at the end of the day, and gate times add a logistical wrinkle.
