If you want a walk that combines a hidden swimming hole, classic Sydney bushland, and a proper climb to test the legs, the Karloo Track and Bottle Forest Trail Loop in Royal National Park is a perfect half-day adventure.

Starting at Heathcote

The hike begins conveniently from Heathcote train station, making it one of the easiest Royal National Park walks to access without a car. A short stroll from the station brings you to the start of the Karloo Track, where you’re quickly enveloped by dry sclerophyll forest. Tall gums, sandstone ridges and the occasional wildflower guide you along the well-marked trail.

Karloo Pool – A Perfect Midway Stop

About halfway down, you’ll reach Karloo Pool, a crystal-clear natural swimming hole on Kangaroo Creek. On warm days, it’s irresistible: the water is cool, clean, and framed by smooth sandstone slabs that make perfect picnic spots. Many walkers come just for this destination – but for the loop, it’s the start of the real journey.

Tip: If you plan to swim, keep a towel in your pack, but be mindful the water can be cold even in summer.

Onto the Bottle Forest Trail

From Karloo Pool, continue following Kangaroo Creek until the track bends upward into the Bottle Forest Trail. This section is more challenging, with a steady climb back towards Heathcote. The path is less trafficked than the Karloo Track, so you’ll often feel like you’ve got the bush to yourself. Expect bird calls, the crunch of dry leaves, and some steep sections that demand a bit of grit.

This climb is why the walk is rated moderate to hard – but the satisfaction of closing the loop makes it worthwhile.

Why It’s Worth It

The Karloo Track and Bottle Forest Loop offers the best of both worlds: a refreshing swim at one of Sydney’s most loved wild pools, and a return leg that gets the heart pumping. Starting and finishing at a train station makes logistics simple, and the variety of landscapes – from ridgelines to creek valleys – keeps the walk engaging throughout.

If you’re looking for a Royal National Park hike that balances relaxation and exertion, this loop deserves a spot on your list.

My Rating

🎒🎒🎒🎒☆ (4 out of 5 backpacks)

Why:

  • Highlights: Easy access by train, Karloo Pool is stunning, and the Bottle Forest climb is a great fitness challenge.

  • Downsides: The return track can feel long and hot in summer, and it’s best avoided after heavy rain when creeks swell.
