Official USOS hike!!
The Cowan to Berowra section of the Great North Walk is one of those classic Sydney bushwalks that packs in a bit of everything – ridgelines, steep descents, creek crossings, and a ferry ride across Berowra Waters. But take it from me: doing it in 30+ degree January heat is not something I’d recommend.

Starting at Cowan
The track begins at Cowan Station, an easy train ride from the city. From here, the Great North Walk heads into dry sandstone bushland, weaving through eucalypts and banksias before dropping steeply towards Berowra Waters.

On a normal day, this is a rewarding route. On a scorching summer morning, though, the heat bounces off the rocks and makes every step feel heavier. Let’s just say I may have nearly broken my sister-in-law on this hike – and I don’t think she’s forgiven me yet.
Down to Berowra Waters
The descent takes you into the lush gullies of Berowra Creek, with birdsong echoing around the valley. The highlight here is reaching Berowra Waters, where you cross by ferry – a quirky and memorable feature of this walk. There’s also a chance to grab a drink, an ice cream, or just pause in the shade before the climb back up.

The Climb to Berowra
From Berowra Waters, the track doesn’t waste any time – it’s a steep ascent up stone steps and forested ridges. On a cool day, it’s invigorating. On a 30-degree summer’s day, it’s downright brutal. Water breaks became essential, and the group morale dipped as quickly as the sweat dripped.

This section reminded me that bushwalking is as much about conditions as it is about distance. What feels like a moderate hike on a crisp autumn morning can turn into a test of endurance when the mercury rises.
Key Info
• Distance: ~13 km one-way
• Time: 4–5 hours (longer if the heat slows you down!)
• Grade: Moderate to hard (steep ascents and descents)
• Start/Finish: Cowan Station → Berowra Station
• Highlights: Ferry crossing at Berowra Waters, varied bushland, birdlife, and creek views
• Best season: Avoid the peak of summer – spring and autumn are ideal
• Facilities: Shops and café at Berowra Waters, toilets at Cowan/Berowra stations
• Fees: No National Park entry fee when walking via train access
Why It’s Worth It
Despite the heat (and some family grumbles), the Cowan to Berowra walk is a brilliant stretch of the Great North Walk. The mix of ridgelines, creek crossings, and the novelty of the ferry ride makes it one of the most memorable day hikes in northern Sydney.
Just do yourself a favour – don’t pick a 30+ degree January day to try it. Save it for the cooler months, when the climb is tough but manageable, and your walking companions won’t threaten to disown you at the end.
My Rating
🎒🎒🎒🎒☆ (4 out of 5 backpacks)
Why:
• Highlights: Ferry crossing is unique, varied terrain, easy public transport access.
• Downsides: Steep climbs both ways, and in hot weather this hike can go from enjoyable to punishing very quickly.
Lessons Learned
Always check the forecast before committing to a long bushwalk.
Start early in the morning to beat both heat and fatigue.
Carry plenty of water (more than you think you’ll need).
And most importantly: don’t drag family along in extreme heat unless you’re prepared for a lifetime of payback!
